Abstract

Since the aesthetic features of a place can play an important role in enhancing the satisfaction of urban residents, the present study aimed to qualitatively investigate the role of aesthetic components of place in improving the mental health of urban residents. This was a qualitative study employing content analysis using a latent analysis approach. The target population included urban planning experts, mental health professionals, and urban residents (the general public). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 42 participants (12 urban planning experts, 12 mental health professionals, and 18 urban residents) selected through purposive sampling until data saturation was reached. Analysis of the findings led to the identification of four main categories: fostering a sense of security and encouraging social relationships, improving individuals' quality of life, managing and regulating emotions, and enhancing family well-being. The results indicated that the aesthetic components of place play a role beyond the merely visual or decorative aspects of urban environments and serve as a fundamental factor in promoting the mental health of urban residents. Therefore, urban authorities are advised to pay special attention to this important issue.
