Exploring of the Factors Affecting Urban Sprawl in Kermanshah Metropolis (Case Study: Dareh Daraz, Nokan, Deh Pahan, Karnachi Villages)

Abstract

In the last few decades, the unplanned physical sprawl and development of cities has imposed numerous positive and negative consequences on peri-urban settlements. In this regard, the aim of the present study was to investigate the factors affecting urban sprawl in the Kermanshah metropolis. This study is applied in terms of its purpose and is classified as descriptive-analytical research in terms of its nature and method. Data collection was carried out using two methods: library and field. The present study is applied in terms of its purpose and descriptive-survey and field in terms of its method and nature of data collection. The statistical population of this study is villagers (head of household). The local community includes four rural settlements of Darreh Deraz, Nokan, Deh Pahan, and Kernachi in the vicinity of the Kermanshah metropolis. The Cochran formula was used to determine the sample size, and the sample size was estimated to be 370 people. The distribution of the sample size in each of the villages studied was based on the quota sampling method. In order to analyze the data, SPSS and Smart PLS software were used, and for spatial analysis, Shannon and KODAS entropy techniques were used. The findings of this study showed that in the economic dimension, the savings status factor had the highest factor load. In the social dimension, the social solidarity factor with the city had the highest factor load. In the environmental dimension, the communication road factor had the highest factor load. Also, the results of the KODAS technique showed that all villages are affected by urban sprawl to different degrees. And among the four villages studied, Karnachi village has the highest impact from sprawl and is in first place. In second place is Nokan village, in third place is Dareh Daraz village, and in fourth place is Deh Pahan village. The results show that the increase in population and the advancement of cities towards the periphery due to physical development have swallowed up peri-urban villages and have had many positive and negative effects in physical-environmental, economic and social dimensions.
